to check the diff i was told to jack up the front and make sure both wheels turn.... does it need to be in gear to test this or will it be ok in neutral

You should put it in gear and turn one wheel, the other wheel should then turn in the opposite direction. It wont tell you if youve lost a few teeth off the diff though. what makess you think its broken?
