Right, this weekend's job is to remove and fill the rear wiper hole so it looks like this:

Best I could do sorry

What do people think? How easy is the wiper to remove?

The method I was going to use is:

1. Fibreglass inside of boot lid to provide a "seat" for the filler
2. fill the recess for wiper, then sand, prime, paint etc etc.

Cheers

Best welding it as filler gradually sinks over time

dont weld it, its too thin and the panel will buckle and warp if it gets too hot, use metal paste/glue style thing, its stronger than a weld and you wont risk making the metal bend

True but if you get a welder who knows what he's doing there shouldn't be a problem

ish, i spoke to a guy who said he did it once and isnt doing it again, always uses paste from now on, if you are welding it you have to do a tiny spot weld then stop, allow to cool, and repeat must take aggggeessss

this is how i did it very easy but make sure the welder is in the rigth temperature. just cut a plat and weld it at the back you may need to bend the plat so that it follows the shape of the boot.

then use fibreglass.

took me bout a day to do, so the wiper will not take that long.

yeah im presuming theirs are spot welded, i didnt really get it unless the boot is more than 0.7mm thick in which case its fine, i think it is just the wings as that was what i was talking about in the first place with the welder dude

I swung by Halfords earlier and have a 22mm grommet.

Wanted a DIY job and quite handy with spray paint. Thought fibreglass and filler would have sorted it. Oh well, grommet it is I guess.

Would it really sink that much?

How is the wiper removed? Seen the two bolts on the inside of the tailgate. Are these just undone, wiring disconnected and the wiper pulled through the back of tailgate, once wiper itself removed.

Thanks for the replies so far

Yes thats how to do it but after you remove the wiper arm remember to undo the plastic nut aswell and the motor will come off

Spray paint on large areas will never be a good look compared to a compressor.

Fair enough on things like wheels, but on a bootlid where it's connected to professionaly finished panels, it's a no no, IMO...
