Thing is i'm not sure whether i like the gear knob- it's the speedtop one so i want to avoid chopping the one i have on now incase i don't like it
My mate tried and the bottom of it split
So heat and a good old yank would get it off in one piece?

if i was you i'd decide weather i liked it more than the standard one before even attempting to swap them, i doubt you'll get it off and possibly back on with no damage.

couldnt agree more....the knobs are not a clever design and if you dont like it i am sure you could get a cheap one you'll like off eBay

Jesus, I'm a veteran in this subject.
Pre97 Corsa - it simply twists off after putting in boiling water. Pre97 has a more square top and is 'plastic'.
Post97 Corsa - it isn't quite so simply. I bought a Steinmetz gear knob, and the instructions for that actually say to take it off using a hacksaw. This is a round top and 'leather'.
I would imagine the Astra is the same as post97 Corsa. Your other option is to source a gear stick, knob and gaitor from an Astra of similar age, muller that one, but you'll still have the original. These come out really easy using a split pin.
The instructions for gear knob removal is in the Haynes manual for the Corsa (definitely post97 manual). It'll probably be the same for the Astra

P.S. You can get a leather speed top one from ESP Design. Very sexy. Or I do have a Steinmetz one going cheaper than retail.

I got hold of the full pre-97 stick etc.
To get it in water, you kind of take the whole stick out the car not too difficult, even I can do it
Check your Haynes manuals, all the info is in there of how to remove each one
