but I don't get cheap tax. And there is nothing on the log book, nor in the car to suggest otherwise.

Being a Vauxhall engine it's probably dribbling constantly, leading the DVLA to list it as disabled.

Imported? Sure it's GL not GI?

My RX7's down as a GI, think it means "Grey Import".

Then your insurance would essentially be void and the whole car a complete sham, surely?

I think if a car is registered as disabled when new, the owner doesn't pay VAT on it. Hence, you buy a £100000 car for £83500, and sell it on for £100k, making £17.5k in the process.

May have also been one of these 'Mobility Scheme' cars, whereby people one disability allowance get a brand new car, insurance, servicing etc paid for, but they get a minimal amount come out of their benefit every month.

DVLA don't really know what they are as they were never UK type approved so the V5 info just gets selected as Impreza GL as this is the first thing on their list.

Note- you cannot insure it as a GL though (the turbo is a bit of a give away to the claims assesor)

as to the disabled bit, Im sure I read somewhere that its to do with the SVA test required for the car before it can be driven in the UK, was some kind of loophole if it was registered as disabled use so it could pass the SVA test.

[Edited on 22-05-2008 by 22B]

just found this bit of info regarding why its registered as disabled when imported and prepared for the sva test

The law didnt change though; it remains exactly the same; but an abused loophole was closed and 'modified for disabled use' vehicles now have to use a comparison test/model report like un-modified cars do. Before you could fix a steering aid onto the steering wheel and and take a simple E-SVA test.

My girlfriends mum is getting a car on the scheme. But she has rheumatoid arthritis so it's quite fair.
