After seeing Jonny J's photos from PVS i thought i'd try re-create a few of his techniques but i cant seem to create the right photo im after.
As seen here in these photos

im trying to re-create the same sort of background blur, i kind of know about DOF (depth of Field) & that a small aperture is needed for these.
now my photos, taken with a fuji using aperture mode & manual, smallest aperture setting etc. foused on the car, why is the background still clearly visible?

is it down to the camera/lens im using or the settings? zoom?
help

jonny has some good kit and although your camera is trying its hardest, i think the lens may restrict it.
Jonnys picture will be on something like F2.8...
What are your settings on? looks like a F4.6 or something like that

Nice bit of zoom always helps too, I took this on my Fuji S6500
F3.8 at about a 150mm zoom

Gaz im sure i was using something like 3.6 or something, definatly wasn't as low as 2.8.
Matt, cool pic. im using the s6500fd & can normally take semi decent pics like that when shooting landscapes or flowers/macro etc. but when it comes to cars, i aint got a clue lol.

Im guessing it down to the lens/body as mentioned.
this was shot at f/8 and thw water was relatively close.

and this one was shot at f/3.5
