bought thias tonight and it probably will be covered somewhere in the instructions, but when you take a pic that has bright area such as a light it flashes black on the palyback, whats this for ?

You have the preview mode in Highlight mode. This shows which areas are overexposed. You can use the up & down buttons on the multi selector control to select different preview modes...
