apparently my alternator pulley is making a really annoying rattle between 2k and 5k. can you just replace it? and is it a dear job?

Apparently?  Get under the bonnet and check 
iirc a new alternator is 100 quid from vaux... could be wrong though.
You'd be able to get a second hand, reliable one for around 30-40 I'd think if that tickles your fancy
EDIT: just noticed you asked about the pulley not whole alternator. Yes, you can replace it but I've no idea how much, sorry
And tbh, I doubt it'd be the pulley making the noise. If it was rattling you'd assume it was loose and if it was loose you'd be loosing fan belts all over the shop. Might need a new alternator after all.
