Ok problem with my brothers PC
Switch it on and it goes to boot up then all of a sudden the screen flashes blue then it goes to that window that says "windows did not start successfully" and you have the options to start in safe mode or just try again
Try again and it keeps doing the same thing!
Any suggestions??

yes its XP whats run the repair mean?
And recovery as in re install?

Yea its cained, maybe i go overboard but when a problem such as this rears its head I knock it on the head and just do a complete reinstall of windows (format the hard drives using the XP Disc and reinstall it back on again). Only takes 30 minutes, its reinstalling all your softwarez that takes ages.
Unless he has a factory reset disc etc.
Also, if he finds no way of booting up, but has some important stuff on his hard drive the easiest to recover it would be to physcially remove the HD and put it in another computer and copy the files from HD -> HD or if not very much to a USB stick.
The solution above is like a 'if all else fails', but im lazy and thats what I would do on my own computer

Yeah known as the "blue screen of death" quite a common issue, just going to echo what Danny said

Put the HDD in a Vitsa machine with Virus Protection and rip all the files off

Or an external caddy ?
And then replace the HDD with a new one. I wouldn't trust it from now on.

Sooo much rubbish here.
Easiest way to somebody asking this sort of question wouldn't be to swap drives about.
Either do a windows repair or just install it over the top without formatting.
This should hopefully get a bootable windows for any data to be backed up.
If none of this works then it could possibly be hardware.
Why would you replace the hdd with a new one?
I can see nothing in this thread that points to a failed drive

Depending on manufacturer it may be built into the computer, we would have to know what one it was to check though.
Otherwise you'll have to get hold of a windows disc.

In my experience with issues like this, 99 times out of 100 its due to a failing hdd.
As already stated many times using a back up disk/original install disk to repair or install, if these arent to hand then removing the files required from the machine by connecting to a second is the easiest way to keep them
Then if formatting is needed then no files are lost. Pretty simple really

They'll need to install windows at some point anyway, hence needing the discs.
Somebody thats on here asking probably won't be confident enough to swap drives over between machines.
Although there is a chance that i could be the drive, in my experience there are a million and one other things that would be wrong before this.
I'm trying hard to think of many times that a bsod has been a fault with the drive and not just a corrupt file or something along those lines, certainly not 99 times out of 100.

sometimes it will boot and is either ok til its turned off again or sometimes its working ok then gets the blue screen and have to restart pc
now it wont even boot up
