Is one good without the other?
I'm going for my winter sports holiday in a few weeks, some of the blokes i'm going with are saying about having both of them. I thought comprehensive travel insurance was good enough and probably better than E111 (or whatever the new equiv. is)
I'm cunfuddled so shed some light on it for me!!!

The E111 card is required for immediate treatment in the EU, as it shows you're an EU member state. I think it's for 'routine' things that is offered on the NHS, as such.
But you'll need Travel Insurance, particularly Winter Sports Insurance in case of accident i.e. being airlifted off the mountain via helicopter. Those things aren't cheap

Check your travel insurance documents closely. Because the E111 card/EHIC entitles you to free or reduced cost healthcare, the insurance company are probably going to require you to have one as part of their terms, as it reduces the payout if necessary.

E111 has been replaced with the EHIC, which you can just apply for online. I had to do it when I moved to spain

I've always thought the EHIC/E111 is a bit of a joke. It should form part of the passport, any UK citizen travelling abroad should be carrying a passport and it should be inclusive, even if they add an extra page.
When we were out snowboarding last year an English lad broke both legs on the first day; he didn't have an EHIC and the French medical service refused to treat him until he raised a £2500 guarnatee/bond for treatment.

E111 gives you emergency treatment in a European hospital. Not very useful when you smash you ACL and need to be helicoptered off of the mountain - the helicopters are run privately and it costs approximately £2k for an airlift. They will then take you to a private medical centre for most injuries who will charge £200+ for an examination. Then there's the sticky business of what happens if you've accidentally knocked someone over while skiiing because they can and will sue the living shit out of you given half a chance...
So, for winter sports get yourself a specific policy with no excess to pay
