Whats the lowest you can go ideally without arch modifications?

Probably 45 at a guess

15" 195/50/15 + 195/45/15

50mm front and 60mm back

My alloys were ET45 and i fitted 5mm spacers and didnt need any arch mods.

17s lowered about 60mm

Corsa C SRi wheels are ET42 and when down 60mm they rub like a bitch i think

I had et38 and 195/50/15 tyres which rubbed on big bumps so never bothered lowering untill i bought et49 wheels. You would be best going for a 185 tyre tho so the walls dont poke out as much. Should be fine and the arch work would be minimal anyways. Sand the plastic arch back a bit and take the top bolt of the rear arch out and stick it on with a bonding adhesive.

Thought ALL vaux wheels are et49 bar very old cars

Mine are ok 60mm front but 40mm rear as they did touch a tiny bit when loaded in the rear , but if I sorted the arch trims I could go 60mm rear no problem, if fact I might do that in the next few weeks.
