There have been a few post on here of late where ppl have contemplated buying a VW Golf or spoken of the pros and cons of the same car...

Well, I myself bought a brand new Golf 2 months ago after trading in my Corsa B, the Golf was without doubt the WORST car I have ever owned!

I had so many problems with the car and the dealer that VW agreed to pay the settlement figure and take the car back!

I have now bought myself an 02 Reg Astra SXI and I feel much more confident being back with Vauxhall!!

Just thought you guys may be interested in my experience with these 'reliable' German manufacturers!

Brave? I would say sensible!

The only thing I can go from is my own personal experience and I had a Vauxhall for almost 4 years without problems!

My Golf only lasted 2 Months without falling to bits!

Vauxhall all the way for me!!

The car was the new 1.6 Match...

The problems with the car were:-

1. Car kept stalling and "Alternator Workshop" appeared on the dash - VW Said the diagnostic machine reported no issues so they would not do anything.

2. Rattle from the rear of the car

3. Rattle from the front of the car

4. Excessive wind noise from the driver’s door

5. Brakes squealed

6. Dash lights kept going out

7. gearbox was poor, seems to have notches in

Problems with the dealer:

1. When the V5 came the car was a Jeep Wrangler

2. Although the car was brand new they registered it in the month before for their sales figures meaning I lost a month of tax

3. VW Roadside assistance only ran for 10 months rather than 12 as it should have done

4. The car was taken in 5 times to resolve the above issues, not only did they not solve them they managed to put the BIGGEST scratch in the dash ever which meant they had to replace a section of it and the car was filthy with nasty smudges and fingerprints all over it!

There are other issues but that’s all I can remember at the moment!

You should have taken the car back and asked for your Jeep!

Not too sure... VW blamed the DVLA for that and the Tax, but when I went to the DVLA and requested the microfiche from them it said VW had entered the wrong details on the forms for the Tax etc...

Add to this the face that not a single person from VW said sorry for anything! It made me a little angry to say the least!

I have got a Mk4 1.4 golf and a mk4 astra 1.8, as a standard car the golf shits all over the astra in every department. Yes the astra is faster of coruse it is but in terms of build, drive, standard kit, driving postion its a lot better.

I still love my astra and i will never sell it, BUT i will be buying VW/AUDI from now on.

I want an Audi S3 next year.

I disagree... Especially about the driving position, the Golf's driving position gave me a bad back if I drove it for any period of time!

As for the Astra, it has nice lumber supports and is a joy to drive!

I admit the Golf is more refined but I would choose the Astra any day!
