You'll need a cover note to take to the post office.

Could do it online if you had your policy number?

Not usually no. You should've given whoever you bought the car off an extra £100 to get the tax sorted.

Pray do tell how you can show a valid mot, or insurance certificate on the website? As said, it searches databases. Think before you speak

Get you insurance to Email you a copy of your cover note, pop to post office and tax it.

VOSA holds all MOT details centrally.
MID holds all insurance details centrally.
DVLA hold all tax and registration details centrally.

When you tax a car online using either your reminder reference or your V5C document reference it can identify the vehicle and it will then obtain the insurance record from MID and the taxation record from the DVLA, the vehicle owners details are then taken from DVLA registration record.

You CAN NOT tax a car ONLINE which does not have a valid MID record or one that is over three years old and does not have VOSA MOT record. In addition the disc will always be sent to the registered keeper (no exceptions).

So in conclusion if the car is not listed on MID you CAN NOT get TAX online.

If he has already arranged the insurance and is only waiting for the Docs to come through it could very well be on the MID database already, meaning he could tax it online.
