So after years of topical and oral antibiotics I've had to be referred to a dermatologist. Went for a consultation on Tuesday and they want to put me on a medication called Roaccutane. After reading some of the side affects, I'm pretty scared of what they may do to me. Some side affects are very severe. They're guaranteed to work but has anyone else taken Roaccutane? What have they been like?
I'm worried

Did you read up on the internet about the side effects? as i did the same thing just before i went to have my HPV injection! and honestly its not as bad as it seems, if you are really worried about it the best person to speak to would be your GP.

unless someone on here has taken Roaccutane... but then again its different for anyone!

hope that helped..(well maybe calm ya nerves!)

ive been on various different medication for well over a year now and the side affects arent always what are guaranteed to happen. they are only what could possibly happen. if they have been prescribed by a doctor and are guaranteed to work then take them

OK cheers Carl. I have been on and off antibiotics for almost 6 years. First it was for teenage spots but now it's developed more into real painful sists (sp) on my shoulders
Sorry I'm sure everyones not into my medical issues.

i was on roaccutane from jan last year until august because of acne, and i must say within a weak my acne had cleaned up visably then after 8 months it had completely gone now i havnt had it for about 6 months and i get the occasional spot but who doesnt.

the side affects did worry me but i never felt depressed or anything like that.

the only problem for me was the dry and cracked lips which was easily combatted with a lipsil.

any more questions feel free to ask.

ps i was on 40mg a day iirc 2 tablets everey 24hours

Shameful to cite a wikipedia article, however I've scanned through it for last 10 minutes and I feel that the information on it is pretty accurate and a well presented introduction to the drug.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotretinoin

Yes, theres a lot of scare-mongering about Isoretinoin type medication however a good deal of it is unfounded in literature/real life. And it is a very effective drug when other therapy has failed.

Included for interest's sake, the prescribing guideline for Doctors. A lot more wordy than needs to be but potentially of interest to you; http://bad.org.uk/site/765/Default.aspx

Do get in touch if any questions after having a read about, and of course your dermatologist is the ideal person to discuss any more pressing questions!

My mate was on it while in school.

Cleared his acne up really quick and his was EXTREMELY bad.

But he turned into a constantly moody argumentative fucker! And seemed down the majority of the time.

Thought about asking the docs for it but thats always put me off

But different drugs affect people in different ways as we are all different. Some people will be affected more than others.

If yours are really bad i'd go for it and if you start getting side effects you are not happy with then stop

you'll prob be in a better mood if it clears your acne up anyway so i'd go for it! seriously though, as fro says, if you are unhappy with the side effects then stop taking them. must be worth a shot.

Thanks Fraser thats a great help.
Fro, I'm very lucky my skin isn't bad compaired to many people. Never suffered from serious acne it's just the sists that I'm getting now are very very painful and tend to take over 5 months to disappear. Very frustrating. I'll try them as I'm not a person who gets down easily by any means.
Thanks again everyone

i was on this stuff a few years back because of bad acne.

still got a bit of scarring where my spots were.

it clears the acne up very quick but it fucks your head up and you go in all sorts of moods.

moisturise with e45 aswell as from what i remember, i constantly felt like i had dry skin/lips.

oh and i always felt tired/depressed whilst on them.

i still get a few spots every now and again but that's to be expected working shifts/not getting much sleep and easting rubbish

drink PLENTY of water also, you'll feel so dehydrated, almost like your skin is on fire.

I was also on it. Like Ben said, you can sometimes get a bit of scarring if you have quite severe acne. Dry/split lips is also a problem. I didn't have problems with mood swings or depression, but I DID have problems with my eyes and I had to go on reduced doses.

My brother and my mate both took this.

Its quite harsh, my bro developed breathing problems and was advised to come off it.

He cleared up a bit but now his hair is really thin and goes patchy.

My mate on the other hand was on the verge of suicidal...we were driving home one night and he turns to me and says...I just want to hit the central reservation....i dunno why?

Real harsh shit.

I was only on it for 2 weeks or so, really made me feel like it just wasn't worth getting out of bed if you know what I mean.

TBH, I was very low at the time anyway (last year of school and workload was like WOAH!). If it wasn't for me having my lil Corsa I think I would have hit rock bottom.
