Whats the requirements with regards to car rental, whos ever done it? My friends reckon the road trip 1024 miles to benicassim in july is a better idea than flying, stopping a couple of times on the way, that said none of them want to take their own car. We will all be 21, although thats the required age will it still be stupidly expensive. Also what generally are their policies with regards to taking a rental car abroad? Also does it usually cost more for additional drivers, and additional insurance? Sorry for all the questions, all the websites are a bit unclear.

You'll be hard pushed to find somewhere to hire you one at 21 I think.

I was after renting one a few months back, I'm 23, and most places wouldn't even give me a quote.

We hired a car in Portugal last year, driver was 21, maybe 22.

Surely it won't be any different renting a car over here.

Europcar was the one i was looking at, minimum age 21, unlimited mileage. Does say it could be more expensive the younger you are though, and doesnt state how much additional insurance is or additional drivers.

You have to be over 21.

There's a young persons surcharge for people between 21 and 25.

You pay per person for additional drivers to be added to the rental agreement, along with even more young drivers surcharges for each driver.

You'll be fine taking the car into Europe, but make sure you check which countries you're allowed into as there may be some limitations if you're going into eastern Europe, Switzerland isn't in the EU and if you're really unlucky you might not be covered.

All in all, flying will be cheaper. Driving will be more fun, but you're better off taking your own car until you're 25 as the cost is pretty high. Saying that, if you share it all between enough of you then it's not all that bad.

When we went to Menorca for 2 weeks Last year, I pre booked a fiesta for a week with europecar, when we arrived at the airport to pick the car up we were informed that they didnt have a fiesta for us but would a mercedes A170 be ok for the same price plus a tank of free fuel for the inconvience?? So 2 weeks of of driving around the Island in a merc and only put 30 euros in the car for fuel. Oh and is was brand new with only 30 Kilometers on it when we picked it up

If you can somehow get the english side out of the way you would be better hiring a car from france then it will be LHD so much better for driving in Europe!

Geurin (sp) hired me a car in Portugal for a week with extended insurance for £130.

Got a little 1.0 Pug 107 that was ragged to fuck but it was only a yr old and had done 40k -kms

For the price it was sound.

Not sure about the milage limitations though, dont recall there being any and it wasnt checked when i took it back.

/\ The brakes were shite and the tyres were like slicks.

There was a terrible rattling from the exhaust at idle to about 1000rpm too.

They really couldnt give a fuck over there. I was 22 and it was fine.

For all the hassle i'd just fly tbh. Enterprise would rent you one at 21 but it would only be a class c or whatever (corsa sized). You would have issues with milage and insurance overseas anyway.
