what does the " f " stand for? I can see it comming up on a pub quiz and people expecting me to know it?

Think its Focal, as in Focal Ratio 5.6 or whatever.

Although the historical origins of this term have been lost, some suggest that it stands for "finestra", the Italian word for window. The Italians are reportedly responsible for inventing the series of numbers we have come to know as f stops

Oh, and its spelt "aperture"

It stands for focal length.

It's f/8 or whatever, and in the equation f is focal length.
