More to it than just getting a space...

You'll have to rent it, so you'll have to deal with the terms of the rent. If its anything more than a rolling month type of lease then Id expect any landlord (in the current climate) will want some sort of rent guarantee for the amount of rent due over the course of the lease.

Then you have to take into account cost of setting up that location, any limits on the water supply and getting rid of the waste water. Landlord may have limits on what you can do on the land. Council may also have limits on what you can do on the land (you'd have to get a lawyer to do a search for you). What about a dilapidations agreement with the landlord, so you are finding yourself with a massive bill when the lease it up?

And thats just the start of it, nothing to do with the company structure, employment, etc. etc. etc.

Also cost of equipment.

You'll need

  1. At least 2 decent preassure washers, Preferably the diesel ones
  2. A decent wetvac
  3. A decent hoover which has a good suction on it
  4. Quite a few good quality pumps for the TFR, Wheel cleaner etc
  5. Different cleaning chemcals. In bulk amounts
  6. Somewhere out the way of the wet area to do all the interior valeting and drying off of the cars
  7. A way of making it a smooth flow through the carwash. eg prewash, wash, rinse, dry and someone keeping tabs of what car is having what wash, and if they have payed
  8. A good way of keeping it all going smoothly when it gets busy
  9. Liability insurance
  10. advertising, signwriting
  11. a way of keeping the site clean. Would you trust someone to wash your car in a place that looks like a bomb site
  12. A rota for the staff that needs to be stuck to. If you want to make decent money, it needs to be open 7 days a week, from early in the morning, to late at night.

Thats just off the top of my head when i worked at one for a while. Plus you need to keep your cool when a customer comes back complaining.

Another good tip is to find a plot next to a car sales place. Where i was in wigan there was one right next door and obviously people wanting to trade a car in there gave it a quick clean before they looked at it, Plus the dealer will or may ask you to prepare their cars for sale.

He won't need all that if he's just wanting to do a bucket and sponge wash.

You've thought into that way too much.

As i said earlier, the best bet is going from door to door with a bucket, mit, shampoo and doing peoples cars on their driveway.

He'd need everything I said - unless he is willing to run the risk of the landlord stinging him (and they will) for all they can.

Thats if he'd want to do it properly on a patch of land/forecort. If you had customers waiting some of them would just turn around and go elsewhere.

Last people who knocked on our door doing this were 10yr old kids - I doubt its a serious business opportunity!

This is will_doyle, and/or his mate we're talking about.
Setting up a proper business with decent equipment isn't very likely.

Sure, if 10yr old kids do that, then you're not going to take them seriosuly, but if will doyle knocked on your door... erm... actually, you wouldn't take him seriously either
What i'm talking about is a sevice like Rich H and his mobile valeting/detailing (maybe not quite as professional), but instead of booking an appointment, they come to your door, and offer to wash your car.
