How can i quieten down my exhaust for my MOT?

Just failed on the exhaust being too loud, that will teach for calling bullshit when someone posted about it as a new MOT rule.

I havent got a centre box and cant afford to get one fitted.

Any ideas?

Take it somewhere else. Although the $50 you'll spend getting a test elsewhere could pay for the box..

ok silly question prehaps, but how loud is too loud??

as i recall the only news on MOT and exhaust rules recently were that aftermarket systems would "fail" an MOT not an exhaust that is deemed "too loud"

Might have a ring around see what I can find, but will a standard back box be quiet without a mid section?

Fonz: I dont know how to describe how loud it is, but its fairly loud.

I expect it'd make enough difference to get it through.

You'd always have the option of selling it afterwards, or keep it for next year just in case.

You should be able to get one from a scrappy for a couple of quid, failing that there's usually someone selling one in classifieds.

i work for a vauxhall dealership and we have a mot test station.

"A selencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehice with a silencer in average condition"

that is from the VOSA MOT TESTING BOOK.

my thoughts exactly.

a 22yr old MOT tester is likely to have a different view point to that of a 57 yr old tester, there are judgement calls to be made but sound is something that can be easily measured (in the same way tyre tread depth can) so should be a level, with units to indicate what is "unreasonable", the condition of the car, rust levels etc are opinionated but sound has units to be measured in

i took that from the mot testing book but in my opinion it its normally down to the testers decision. we have many race cars in for mot and let them pass. and my car passes everytime lol. twenty quid under the sunviser next time may help
