Off to do the Altura Trail in Whinlatter Forest near Keswick tomorrow night with a few lads from work. Will be about 8 of us so should be fun! Looks very similar to the North Face Trail in Grizedale from the videos I've looked at: Altura Trail Video

http://www.forestry.gov.uk/alturatrail

This is one advantage to living in the Lakes that we can do stuff like this in the evenings after work

Has anyone done it before?

Nope

Just bought some thule roof bars and waiting to buy some carriers so i can go to places further afield. Is such a laugh to drive somewhere remote with bikes, a tent and maybe a few crates of beer

The North Face was about knackered last time I went on it, getting very worn out compared to when it first opened, needs re-doing.

The Altura trail only opened at the start of this year I think so should be in good nick still! Not looking forward to the climb up though

What did you think of Grizedale last time you did it? I thought it was well past its best... its just totally worn away compared to when it was first built.

gez - one of the lads coming tomorrow is one of these DH nut jobs. Wont even bother trying to keep up with him.

Last time I went out with one of my other mates thats also a DH racer I made the mistake of trying to keep up with him on the last few down hill sections towards the visitor centre at Grizedale. Wiped out big time, blood everywhere

Yer it needs a bit of work to get it back to its best. I enjoyed my first visit alot more but I dont know if that was just because it was the first time I did it or not.

I had a big off there last time I did it It was really wet all week and my front wheel washed out on a turn on one of the wooden sections.

You will have to update on what this new one is like as we want to try somewhere different this year

Whinlatter is fucking amazing! Its miles better than Grizedale, much harder and quite scary in places Definately get yourself there instead of Grizedale. There's near vertical switchbacks, decent jumps, weaving through the trees then the final bit is on the video I posted. You really wouldn't want to come off or you are straight down the side of the steep hill!

Proper loved it!

One of my mates didn't fair so well. On the last descent (the one in video) he came off over one of the jumps. Ended up in A&E, punctured through to his knee cap Luckily we were only 1/4 mile from the car at that point.

This vid gives a better overview of the trail generally... trail vid

cwmcarn - i hazve been several times, great place for downhill and even the red route XC trail is fun.

If you are doing the downhill book the uplift serive it runs from Thursday to Sunday and is worth every penny!
