I was considering quitting my job and going to Australia for a year. But I decided this was probably not a very sensible idea as I have a pretty good job so should try and stick with it.
Now i'm looking at going for 3 weeks or a month instead.
Couple of questions.
Firstly, how much should I budget for a month? Including flights but staying in hostels/camping.
Secondly, is there anything that I should really try and get in while i'm there? So far I have Sydney and the Gold Coast as places to visit.
Thanks.

Australia Zoo in Brisbane
Oh, and whale watching off morton bay (i think thats where it was anyway) is too.
Edit - Byron Bay is good too, plus...you can sky dive there if you have the balls.

You want £500-£1000 a month (depending on how much you do or don't large it.
Flights = £700-£1000 economy return.
Hostels are roughly £10 a night, more for the bigger chains. I definitly recommend staying at the Wake Up! hostel near central station in Sydney, its a fun place, great location and loads of fanny.
Byron Bay,
Fraser Island is an absolute MUST.
Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach....I could go on all day if I had time

when i look back on my trip there last Spetember, i'm gutted that i didnt stop off (any more then for a fuel re-fill for the plane) anywhere on the way.
Might want to consider that on your way there or on the way home.

The ideal would be to do this:
Outbound: London > Singapore > Sydney
Inbound: Sydney > Bangkok > London

I was in Singapore for a month, it was so comfortable, could easily have stayed longer.

Going on your own or with mate/GF?
Cost you a hell of a lot less on your own.....I'd probably get a bit bored for a month without mates though tbh.

what time of year you going, i did exactly the same thing - twice.
First time was in May/June for 3 weeks and in total it all cost £1700 travelling with Emirates from Cairns down to Sydney. That covered the Barrier Reef, Cairns, Noosa, Fraser Island, Brisbane, Surfers, Byron Bay then Sydney.
Second time was xmas/new year. Prices are extortionate, flights cost £1500 alone, then about a grand on top. Flew into Sydney, upto Alice Springs, down to Perth then across to Sydney for new year.

yeah but that's Asia. I was paying about a quid for a nice hotel room a night in asia and a quid for each meal.
In Australia / New Zealand I found I was spending over £1000 a month, prob £1500 ish or so per month, maybe more when you're doing sky dives, bungees etc.
