Really just patience.

On mine I cut down the centre and then pulled/twisted it off.

Never known one though to come off in one piece though and re-useable

Yeah cut the old one off, hammer it batter it it'll break off. Remove the old leather, cut the clip its held on with, slide new leather on. Slide in handle, tighten up and I zip tied the leather to the handle, on the inside (ie inside out) then replace and secure into the floor. Easy as pie!
