I've put off getting a racer for about a year because I dont like the lycra shorts! But decided sod it, its what everyone wears on them and its not like I'll be going out round town dressed like it

I'd go for the tramp on a racer look, that you often see. Just don't think I could do it!

I'm having this dilemma too. I cycle to work nearly every day so I'm going to be doing the same scheme. But I can't decide whether to get a racer or decent mountain bike. I don't use the roads because we have a cycle network called redways. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redways But the surfaces of some redways are a bit toss, and after riding my mates racer the other day it felt like my arms were going to fall off due to the vibrations.

There are them hybrid bikes, they look toss but they are probably your best bet. I'm still swaying towards just a mountain bike as my commute is only 4 miles. Some wanker in payroll won't join the scheme though, joke since I work in Public Health and are meant to be promoting healthy living yet I can't get a good deal on a bike.

I'm a little bit vain though so the bike would have to look smart

My commute (Matt H ) is about 6 miles each way, so it probably doesnt matter too much what I go for. My company do it but they only seem to do it once a year or something. I was speaking to a guy who got his through the company and he got it in December. Reckons they won't do it again till then

Some Hybrids have mountain bike frames, front suspension but with wheels that roll much better. So you get mountain bike looks and comfort and they still go along at a reasonable speed.

How much do you want to spend?

The Specialized Crosstrails mentioned in Matt H's thread have a mountain bike frame with the faster rolling wheels...

My mate with the racer gets punctures quite bit because of them. He bought stronger tires, lined with kevlar or something, and its helped stop them. He still gets the odd one from time to time though.
