probly a 50 cc for now or a 125

what type of metal should we be using for the frame itself?
and what thickness?

If you are doing it properly 19mm x 1.6mm CDS round tube and TIG welded joints.

To make it easier and cheaper for a home scratch-built, Go for 20mm x 1.6mm ERW square section. MIG welded joints is a bare minimum (arc isn't controllable enough at those thicknesses for amateurs)

dont bother waisting ur time. u can buy rolling chassis cheap enougth on ebay and kartin etc. and dont bother with 50cc. u want a 100cc minimum. direct drive engines are cheap but if u can get a clutched 100 much better as easier to start. other option is a rotax lump but theyredear, or to go for a 4 stroke honda engine like 200 upto a 390cc etc. 4 strokes are not as quick but more reliable

i was thinking of a 125 derby sender engine that my mate has lying around

but he said something about the gear ratio's being well out and i know nouthing about that sort of thing
