C16xe has AFM and a couple more bhp (barly any tho)

X16XE runs the same sorta stuff as the X14XE, without afm etc etc.

XEL is astras and the like, again, less power.

c16 xe has got a better head. it is flowed better, the TB is slightly bigger and the inlet ports are bigger. ECU is mapped for higher fuelling. This all makes for a more responsive and much better engine.
Downside is that the stem seals are prone to having worn at around 70k or so, and the engine starts to smoke and drink oil.

The x16 was released to cut the emissions to meet government guidelines (hence the 'X' in the code) as well as provide a better quality engine all round. It's toned down a little on the ECU side and the revised head design increases lifetime. It also doesnt have an AFM, which can cause problems on the C16.

X16XEL was designed for the astras and with family/luggage transport in mind, the power and torque are delivered lower in the rev-range, so making for better drivability with increased weight on board.

hope that helps!
