i would stick with what you have planned. Do a compression test first, just to check, but these engines can take a real beating.
Defo get a full cambelt kit though (tensioners and belt) and also do the water pump whilst its all off.

Wouldnt bother with the headgasket mate. As has been mentioned before, if it aint broke, dont fix it.
But for the likes of a timing belt, if it breaks, your in big trouble!
