My 1.4 sport will sometimes not start first time (normally when its been left for 12+ hours), if it doesnt start first time it will always start 2nd time and theres always a strong smell of petrol once its started for a good 30 seconds. Can someone tell me what could be wrong? Im a bit worried about it as ive not had it too long.

Find out what fault code you have on the eml, possible coilpack problem on the poor starting but could also be lots of other reasons.

Paperclip test right? I thought the eml has to stay on for that to work?

Harrisp thats what i thought? BUT..
I have read through the instructions on how to read the code but could not work it out. I have 10 flashes? Then 1 then 3.... That does not make sense for my ecu? I must be reading it wrong?

I think the first 10 is unrelated and the 1 is your first digit and 3 is your second digit of the code.
Its been a while since I did one though so cant really remember

I supose it could do. If the car cannot read the amount of oxygen present it may just be stuffing more and more fuel in there.
iirc the oxygen sensor is on the exhaust manifold

If it is your lambda at fault then its a DIY job a bit fiddly to get at but possible.
