The Police have a job to do like the rest of us. I've not come across a bad copper yet even when i've been pissed up and tried to get into a couple  They'll have a bit of a laugh with you and send you on your way.
I've been pulled a few times driving stupidly (mainly when i was younger), as long as you don't give them shit they'll give you a telling off and send you on your way. Why would they want all the paper work after all...

Also, if its catching speed bumps (and sometimes they even count mudpflaps in that...) then you are causing damage to her majesty's highway and that is an offence, which may well be another reason for them taking it.
Stupid...but thats how it is. I agree that there must be a good reason for them sending a van and taking the car. Police around here have only ever been good with me. (excluding the fact i know most of them)
