Do you have anything concrete saying the PS3 couldn't render at that?
I think it could, although not at 50 or 60 fps.
Sony have a few quad hd (which that resolution is, 4x, not 2x) tv's, some of which are available to buy atm.

If you had access to the PS3 SDK, and actually read through it, it states that only the following front buffer resolutions are supported for hardware scaling to 1920x1080p: 960x1080 1280x1080, 1440x1080 and 1600x1080

I have not read through the SDK docs, and that's not what I asked either.
The SDK won't let you render at that, do you have anything that says the PS3 can't render at that?

I have no idea if the PS3 could render at those resolutions in realtime, it certainly can't do it at anything resembling a playable framerate.

Sony themselves at the presentation said upto 1080p, which is 1920x1080.
The hardware may well be capable of outputting at a higher resolution for all I know, but not via HDMI, and it definately will not be at any playable frame rate. There is no support in the PS3 for higher resolutions, so why showcase ingame footage at a resolution which is not supported nor used by mainstream users in todays market?

I'm not saying that they'll ever have it playing at that resolution, or even if the PS3 has rendered they pictures or not, I'm just saying I believe that it could do it, which I'll stand by until I see something saying otherwise.
It can definitely render twice as fast as it is currently to pump out 100Hz 3D over hdmi.

i would expect images like these to be rendered for print in magazines / posters etc which they do for most games its likely theyve been taken from ingame shots and then enhanced. Even so they look pretty damn good will deffo be buying this

As they're press release images they'll be rendered at high res so that they can be printed at 300dpi in magazines and posters. They'll be rendered either in the software used to design the game graphics, or even using the games own 3D graphics engine.

Or in a stand alone rendering package.
Whenever games come out, they always have 'not actual footage' in the bottom of the advert.
