This is a pic of my bike...Just using it as an example.
Say if i wanted to change certain bits of the bike that are painted black to white, how would I go about changing the colour, also keeping shadows and shading etc just to give me an idea of what it may look like?

The easiest thing to do would be to select the area you want and then go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. This stops weird colours coming up when you do colour changes.
Then go to Image > Adjustments > Variations (last on the list) and keep clicking 'lighter' until it's roughly how you want. One thing to bear in mind, is for example if you use Variations and then click Ok but want to change it some more, you need to hold Alt and then one of the buttons changes to "Reset". Otherwise it will apply the same amount of colour etc again, if that makes sense.
