my mums freelander conked out yesterday while driving in town.

it wouldn't start at all yesterday and a mechanic came over today and got it running but it's smokey as hell (white smoke). it's a 2.0 turbo diesel.

they guy thinks it's had petrol or contaminated diesel put in it. me and my dad think it's where my mum has left it so low on diesel that it's picked all the shite out at the bottom of the tank.

wondering whether there will be any lasting damage to this as last time this happened it wouldn't start at all and needed over 2 grand spent on it to get it running again.

depends how much has been ran through the system.
mate of mine drove about 200yards and realised. about £50 to drain the tank, my grandad did it but drove as far as the car would go till it wouldnt move, cost £600 for a volvo to get flushed through and labour.
looks like you might have the latter option mate hope its okey

change the fuel filter then, shouldnt affect it to bad as thats what the filter is for so it doesnt get the shite threw. but try that might sort it.

It isn't as bad, but by no means great.

With regard to the sucking up shit because the tank was low. My biking mate has a 2.0TDi Touran. One morning it ran like shit and had hardly any boost. As if in limp mode. Then all of a sudden it was fine again. Was just about driveable.

Deisel into Petrol will work but smoke, can just keep putting petrol in untill it works.

Petrol into Deisel however, needs all flushing out propery, can be an expensive job.

i dont think the "shit at the bottom of the tank" issue has exsisted for about 40 years

when you cosider where exactey the fuel is collect from (ie the bottom) it isnt an issue, or even exsists

^^ hes right, fuel is collected from the bottome of the tank anyway - and even if there was 'shit' there it would be removed by the fuel filter.

Try topping it up with diesel and see if it works, but chances are it will need flushing through.

if you put petrol into diesle its pritty bad, can be just a new filter and fuel or it can screw the pump, injectors, and need all pipes.. Hope it just needs a filter

Its the other way around as diesel does not ignite with a spark.

A friend of mine would fun his diesel escort van on the fuel we used to drain from petrol cars that had been filled with diesel and vice versa. Only on long journeys mind.

as above petrol into a diesel can mean a new fuel pump injectors etc. usually its ok just pump it all out, new fuel filter, full tank of diesel and a fuel flush. job done

i once put 5litres of diesel in my 1.2 8v (not my fault...fucking garage had the pumps back to front, usually you expect petrol to be closest to the front of the car...but when you find yourself in a garage run by...ethenic people, they're opposite), then when I realised I put 35-40L of petrol in to try to water it down. lol, it ran lumpy for a few miles then ran fine

I thought the same until I did it. Not my fault the...people that aren't originally from this country have petrol stations where they switch the order of the pumps. After years of grabbing the closest pump to you (petrol one), it becomes a habbit

Petrol in a diesel is MUCH worse than diesel in a petrol.

Exact same thing happened to my old dears Freelander and it was because she was letting it get so low on diesel it was dragging through the shite from the bottom of the tank.

There's a wee pump (i think) under the right hand rear wheel arch. Any time it was conking out you gave that a tap with a hammer and it would start first time.

If you have access to both Petrol and Diesel cars then its pretty easy to make the mistake. If you only drive a Diesel day in day out then yeah agreeded its pretty stupid.
