I found myself asking this question too.And the answer i got was not a hope in hell.
My mate has a 330d and my bro had an E36 M3(3.0).
Even with a Remap on the 330d,the M3 would still hammer it.Seriously quick cars.

i have a 330ci but i spent 9k on it, 5k will get you a clean andhonest m3 these days....
i say m3, if it breaks or costs too much on fuel/servicing you could walk to work, but with such little milage a year i cant see that it will

Oh and i would personally stay clear of an M3 Evo.Pay the same and get a decent 3.0 version. The Evos may have more power(on paper)but they never make the 321bhp they are quoted for.More like 300 tops.

2nd that, a 204bhp model 330d is a tad slower than a 330ci.
my mates track prepped36 m3(non evo) would easily beat my e46 by a much bigger gap than any remapped 330.
with just its rear seats gone and a full exhaust system it felt a tad quicker than a mates p1

My mates 330d is the earlier 187bhp(or thereabouts)engine. My boss had the 204bhp model 330Cd and it was noticeably quicker than my mates, but still no where near the pace of an E36 M3.

True the evos never make the 321bhp but they are still more powerful than the 3.0L, have quicker steering rack, digital climate control, 6 speed box, strengthened rear chassis and subframe + loads more.

And the dreaded Vanos issue.

Cant go wrong with a 3.0 m3 tho, its very hard to find a quiet sounding vano's on a evo model now even with fsh . I pretty much punished mine for couple years now, its racking up 180k on the clocks too, recently had it dyno'ed and it made 294bhp , more than the 286bhp standard, well chuffed , also managed a 13.4 1/4 at the pod in the summer!!
