Ive been working as a technician for a local haulage company since the start of the year, one of my jobs has been servicing the tower carrier, which carries wind turbine towers.

Up until just now, ive never actually seen it in action, and am pretty amazed how they can get this thing round tight corners etc. The total length is somewhere in the region of 50meters

Have a look....

Passed a few on them on the road recently, about 3 new windfarms on the go here, all with police escort from the port to the farm.

Good work in perparing the windfarms too, worked on a few.

And this is what happens when the road breaks up underneath you. Driver was extremely lucky, it was stopped when they saw road break up, he went to jump out and it tipped. Luckily he was half out of the cab, with it being a left hooker he was on the opposite side to the floor. He still jumped back in, and held onto the steering wheel, which snapped the shaft in 2!

I work in a civils engineering company, in Derby, and we've worked on quite a few Windfarms, and seeing them design the drawings with your trucks on it is incredable, take all the length of it into consideration, it's fantastic.

yea, my boss does all the route planning on these, has all this special software so he can drive the trucks along the route on his pc. so he knows if they can take corners, and where they have to aim at etc to make a corner. VERY time consuming stuff, but the pay for such haulage is massive. He says it will easily pay for one of them trucks per contract, and i know the truck cost over 100k

Would it not be cheaper/easier for them to be made in multiple parts and delivered to site and joined together?

That is in multiple parts lol

Theres 3 of those to one tower, then the narcell and 3 blades.

Heres a video of the upper parts being moved, these are moved on our extendable trailers, rather than the tower carrier, as they are a smaller diameter, and less weight

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmPIHaSHwTg&feature=channel

Also, moving some concrete, mad length..

Near where I am is Stoney Cove (Inland Diving Centre) I remember watching them take the huge wreck (Stanegarth: http://www.stoneycove.com/wrecks/stanegarth.htm) thats in there, through the streets I used to live.

BT had to take down all the overhead telegraph poles/cables at each point down the street to get it to its new home!
