Think I might have to invest in some narrow wheels and knobbly tyres next time.

In that case no

But its not like a normal box, it wont just build up speed if you roll down a hill. It will roll at like 3 mph if your lucky. So you never really going fast enough to cause you to properly skid when you do eventually need to brake. Its wikied. Ive gone down some stupidly steep lanes in the peak district and didnt skit in the water/mud.

the ford ranger at work is rwd.. pain in the arse setting off on ice with hardly any weight on the back.

put it into 4wd mode (can choose ) and its much easier setting off and keeping traction on icey corners.

So are we saying 4WD is best for most/all conditions then?

All of the cars have just as much grip availalbe (obviously tyres play a part) but RWD cars tend to have very little weight over the rear wheels so struggle with traction.. AWD cars have the most traction as they have four driving wheels but FWD are the middle ground they have the weight of the engine over the front wheels to aid traction.

Its obvious really.. If four wheels are driving you are sharing the forward load so you will have better chance of getting traction on the surface. The physicis is the other way round for vertical load (weight) the wider the tyres (the more the load is spread) the less chance you have of getting traction.. Which is why rally drivers use thin tyres on ice stages.

Also its a common misconception that a car with ABS will stop quicker than a car with out, the only benefit of ABS in this type of weather is that your car wont end up side ways ever time you hit the anchors.
