When setting up surround sound to play TV and PS3, would running the PS3 via HDMI to TV then optical from TV to the player be the right option or would that only give me the sound from the tv and not the surround sound from the PS3

Surely your PS3 is plugged in to the surround sound so all the sound goes through the surround sound system?

Yeah, if you want sound just from the tv, plug the coloured pins/scart in to the tv. Provided your surround sound is similar to mine you can leave plugged in to the surround all the time and just change AV channels.

If I'm reading your post correct, you want to set up your PS3 as HDMI from the PS3 to the TV (picture) and optical from the PS3 to the surround sound. That's how mine is set up. It doesn't send sound through the HDMI to the TV as well though. It's one or the other, not both. There's a setting on the PS3 that lets you choose if you want HDMI or optical settings for sound.

If you want to run both tele and ps3 through optical just get an opticals splitter.

Do you use Sky, Virgin or a digi box for your tv?
