I'd go for the Astra. A Focus is apparently the better drive. I think most cars in that budget are much of a muchness really.

She doesn't mind downsizing, it's all to save money, we've got a big coupe and a big saloon at the moment and there's just the two of us, so it's pointless having both and both costing us loads.
Focus is ok but she doesn't like the older one, only the mk2, which is a little pricey with any sort of spec.

Get the Fiesta. If circumstances change in the next year you won't lose any money. I swear they've gone up in value since I used to rant and rave about them.
I gather you're both petrol heads but I wouldn't rule out a derv Toyota Yaris or Corolla. Boring, but cheap to run from all angles.
That's why I think the Fiesta is such a great car. Cheap to run, but with sporty credentials and a bit of performance. Great little package. Make sure you get a facelift if you intend on changing the stereo otherwise dash hacking is in order.
