You're earning enough to go private? Even ask your HR department if the work subsidise it?

I was on my bosses private healthcare plan at my last job, never used it right enough, first time I want to be in a hospital is on a cold slab deid. I fucking hate the places.

I'm private, but had to use A&E in February when I got a stricture in my bowel, oh the joys.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital is a dump and run by trainees, for some reason unknown to me I had to have a drain into my stomach that went through my nose down my throat and into my stomach, up until recently I have been suffering with a horrendous pain in my chest which I believe was caused by the idiot feeding the pipe down too quickly and scaring my wind pipe.

Plus the fact they fed me the wrong foods and made me more sick and gave me drugs which made me violently sick for a week.

Really good service, pleased I pay NI for that shower of shit.

The stricture didn't cause a perforation or anything? Thats one reason they'd give you an ng tube.

No, I was being sick but I was being sick because I had a massive dose of liquid morphine which can do that, I didn't need a tube down my throat for a week.

You're telling me, I'm the one that had just been admitted, got myself comfy in one ward and out of pain with morphine and was asleep, to be woken at 2am being moved to another ward, then couldn't get comfy and started to be sick.

I was sick 3 times and then the nurse decided to treat me to one of the worst experiences of my life, having to swallow a tube through my nose whilst feeling sick and very tired.

I actually think being there made me worse for longer than I had to be.

My experience with NHS has been shit, released 5 days after being admitted and 2 years later they released I had fractured a vertabrae. Took 3 years for an MRI, another 6 months to do another as they cocked the first one up, Sent from one consultant to another for 6 years and eventually I just gave up with it and cancelled the appointment.

Other instances was that I went in to A&E on a monday late, sat there for 4 hours and was told to leave as I had "pulled a muscle", Couldn't stand the pain so on the wednesday went to the doctor who sent me straight to the hospital and found out I had a slipped disk - Beleive it or not this has happened 3 times now

Our GP is ok in that you can get in on the day, but I might as well talk to a brick wall for the information I get from Dr Gargav, completely useless.

if your lucky enough to get through to my local one you will usually have to wait weeks for an appointment, then sit with all the smelly pakis and east europeans who come in after you and get seen before you, then get to see the "doctor" who is someone barely able to speak english who seems to want to get you out of the office as fast as they can.

Me and our lass were at the maternity hospital a few weeks ago and there was this asian bloke and his wife at the desk, usually it takes about a minute or 2 to book the appointment for next time or just hand you documents in and wait for them to call you but this bloke didnt speak a word of english, it took the receptionist about 15 minutes to try to get through to this guy and even then a translator still had to explain it to him again queue was getting bigger and bigger as the lady tried to get through to this waste of space

Yep plastic not steel mesh! I was shown a sample before they put it in! Almost made me pass out there and then (i dont do blood, guts and anything to do with opening people up)!

I had a hernia in Sept 03. Went to the docs next day, got referred as i was on private medical insurance at the time, got my consultation within 3 days aswell. Went to see the consultant, he offerred me that afternoon for the op, or whenever i really wanted. I had it 1 week later, in and out in a day, 1 week lying down doing naff all, 2 weeks taking it easy! I spilt the wound open at the end of the second week but it healed ok!

Now, compared to the guy i work with who had a hernia around the same time and he went NHS, he had to wait 6 weeks to get onto the operating table!

When i was 15 i broke my leg, the nurses and my surgeon was nice but apart from that it was horrible.

Food was cold and horrible
I had chewing gum on the floor in my room
Was laying in my bed in the x-ray waiting room for like 30minutes, there is probs more but cant think at moment.

I also have problems with my eyes, when i last went into hospital my appointment was at 11:30, i didnt get seen till about 12:30-1 o'clock. I was in there for about 5 minutes and was told carry on using the eye drops and i can go home, complete waste of time

I went to the doctors with bowel pain at mid day. I was referred to the hospital and told to arrive at 4pm. I was being operated on to remove my appendix at 8pm. I was in the recovery room by midnight. I was moved to my own room at 2am and slept soundly until the next day. I ate well and had a generally agreeable time before being discharged with the all clear two days later.

It's not all bad.

This is because the majority of the UK are NHS and not private. If private had as many patients as NHS do, you'd have a 6 week wait there as well. But nope, it automatically means the NHS is shite. I agree some of their staff and some hospitals are utterly horrendous but it's pot luck unfortunately. I really feel that these folk who do nothing but moan about NHS (Like my gran, even though they've saved her life numerous times) should just go private if it's that bad.

Well, i suppose i was just lucky with my hernia, but on my last few trips to hospital, the service has been crap.

I went to L&D hospital with an asthma attack. They told me i just had a bad cough and sat me in the waiting room for 5 hours whilst i could barely breath. My mum (who drove me down) even asked for a portable nebuliser to be plugged in so i could at least breath a little easier whilst waiting. Nope. Told to wait.

Finally at 1am (bearing in mind there were only about 8 people in the waiting room with me), i was taken through and given cough medicine because the nurse still thought i had a bad cough. The doctor told her to shut up and put me on the nubuliser. Finally on the medication she returns after 10 minutes to tell me i'm not breathing correctly and tells me to stop messing around. She then realises she hasnt got the correct amount of oxygen pumping through the system so i cant actually take in the medication as quickly as i should.

But on the other hand, i also went to MK walk in clinic (at the hospital) but got sent to the A&E by the nurse there due to burst blood vessels in the eye and extreme pain.

Was seen by a chap whos english wasn't the best but he seemed ok. Was told he was an eye specialist so thought nothing of it. He told me there was an infection and to put drops in. Fine, no problem there i thought. He said it should clear in 5 days, if not, to return. I went back 2 days later with a fractured foot, got told this same guy was a fracture specialist. Hang on, he was an eye guy the other day!!! He told me i had a fracture, strapped it up and sent me on my way.

Eye was getting worse, so managed to see my optician. When she saw my eye she litterally fell off her chair. She said she could barely see in my eye due to something called Uveitis, not the infection that was supposedly there. From what i understand its something that should have been easily picked up with very basic tests! Ended up going private for treatment for the eye as i just didnt trust the guy at MK! He had it sorted within two weeks, hwoever due to the time period of me fannying around with eye drops for something that wasnt there, i am now slightly short sighted in that eye. As for the foot, that was still giving me grief (it got mush worse than before) to be told that the original x-ray showed NO fracture whatsoever. just a slight bit of swelling in the area. When i asked the doctor (it was a different one this time) if its easy to mix the two up, she said certainly not.

I would say those are my worst two experiences, i've got no probel with my GP and the nurses there, and some of the nurses and doctors in the hospital, but i do question whether some of them actually know what they are on about half the time (like the guy who looked at my eye and foot)!

Personally I've had no recent dealings with the NHS but when my gran was in hospital her treatment was utterly disgracful Poor old soul, it still reduces me to tears when I think of going to visit her and the filth she would be sitting in The ward she was in simply hadn't enough staff to cope, the nurses were run off their feet but just couldn't cope will all that needed doing
