in the middle of lowering the rear of the car.....but im having trouble taking the rear shocks off.The top nut wont come loose,it just turns with the rubber and the washer that are below the nut....anyone got any tips?

molegrips (sp) on top of the threaded bit or a 7mm spanner i think it is and that should get it off

There are flat edges machined into the top of the piston so that you can hold it while turning the nut, you're probably better off with molegrips like Danny suggested or a smallish adjustable spanner because a spanner the right size will break easily. I know this from first hand experience 
In fact - here's a pic. I pushed it sort of back together again, but it was literally hanging on by a thread.

No, as the piston will still turn. You have to use a spanner and something to grip the top.
The spanners that Halfords do with a ratchet in the ring end would be ideal for this, not sure if they make one the right size though.

im with you now, what about a ring spanner, should be a bit stronger then the open ones?

I don't think you'd be able to use a ring spanner as there are only two flats on the piston, not 6, so it won't fit around.

I jacked the the car up took the wheels off got someone to hold the top of the shock in the wheel arch while i used a rachet inside to car and it came straight off

thats only if your using cheap spanners. never had a spanner do that with me
