People wouldn't have noticed the rise back to 17.5 as much because most retailers have taken the hit for it instead of repricing again when it looks set to rise again.

havent heard anything about this so cant see it happening that soon tbh otherwise we'd of had a shed load of letters about it at work.

tbh the change down to 15% and back never made any difference to me personally.

You won't get any letters until it's announced officially.

I'd say it's pretty likely. They can either choose to raise VAT or raise income tax. I know which I'd prefer!

Does your company not claim their VAT back?

When they originally put it down to 15% to help kick start the economy - my boss said "wtf does it matter to me? I pay VAT then claim it back. I'm just a tax collector for the government".

Iirc would depend on the balance of the quarterly VAT return, they may owe HMRC or be due a refund from them depending on sales and purchases for the period.

Edit: Based on the co. being VAT reg'd.

From my point of view - I need a new laptop soon - I have a couple of student debts which are nearly paid off, i have a job, earn a reasonable wage but nothing stupid - generally im ok with money - pay my taxes ect and always have done....... and yet im gonna have to pay a considerable amount more for my laptop soon due to the irresponsible action of the millionaires who run our country and our banking system ..... I personally think that is a big deal and can see why it makes people livid - VAT raises dont make much of a diffrence to most ofus - but they make a massive difference to those workers at the bottom of the earnings pile

Your boss is correct (ish)

Or is it 'I pay VAT, charge VAT on my services then claim VAT back(via every single VAT receipt I can gather whether it's business related or not - subject to a good accountant)'......subtley different.

We will see VAT at circa 23.5-25% within a year IMO.

1% VAT rise (given the GDP at the mo) apparently equals £5BN revenue...and the defecit is presently about £170BN?

Lots of tax rises and cuts ahead im afraid methinks

Go to the back of the class and consider all of the other VAT applicable running costs for your cars/toys.

Massive cuts are a cert, I'm not so sure about tax increases. It would render the initial tax decrease fairly meaningless given we're still not fully out the hole we were in.

It will rise, but I highly doubt it will rise anywhere near that amount within a year. I wouldnt mind betting we'll see 20% by Christmas though.

Why? Nothing I can do, its a luxury item for 1 bike, and needed for the other for work. I can't complain about one and not the other, so im not going to complain.

Prices will always go up, nothing anyone can do about it. I certainly wouldn't be moaning about another 10p on a pint or something. If I was hard up, I wouldn't go to the pub and would buy from an offy.

So I get charged another £20-£30 per year, so what, as long as my wages are raised to match, meh.

A lot of organisations that we work for are charities and therefore pay tax.
