For as long as I can remember Ihave only got downstream speeds between 300-500k.

After getting no where with Talk-Talk phone help I found an article about testing the connection by plugging your router directly into the NTE-5 socket.

Upon doing this I am now seeing connection speeds over 2 meg.

Thus what does this mean? shitty wiring in the house? A dodgy phone plugged in etc etc?

Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Cheers.

Where is the router plugged into normally?

It's either the faceplate or the wiring after the faceplate.

router is plugged into faceplate on the NTE-5 socket usually. I have disconnected the bell wires from that faceplate.

after router reboot its gone up to 1.6 megs.

Do you think my ISP will have to change/fine tune my broadband profile. I am going to monitor speeds over the next few days but theoretically I should be able to get 2.5-3 megs.

there are no telephone extension leads anywhere in the house either.

Anything else I should check?

Thanks.

Do you know if you are on the unbundled service or not?

If you are they can fine tune it by changing the profile, if not there's nothing they can do.

Might be worth getting a replacement faceplate, talktalk might send you one free, they call it a 'tune up kit' i think.
