'clear' hard to define
Comparing like to like I would say mine is as clear as an LCD would be. If you have a 2m TV and projector i recon they would be on a par on how clear they are.
My 46" LCD is much sharper than my 2m 720p projector but then the picture covers a much larger area so its expected really.

It all depends on which models you are comparing, how big you want the image to be and how close you are to the screen. I've got the Panasonic PT-AE4000 and the image quality is incredible :-)

I got a Optoma HD200X 1080p full HD in November for a shade over £800. I have a blu ray player and 360 on it, definately recommended, its absolutely awesome, get one!

I wouldn't go that far. My PTAE-700 was 1200 when it first came out but now can be picked up for pennies. You can get 2 generations newer for around £500 now and IMO the picture is "'good" and will be pleasing to most bar videophiles.

i was really happy with my old pt-ae900 but i did a side by side comparison with my new pt-ae4000 with the same signal source and the old one looked broken! Saying that though, you could still pick up a decent second hand one for 800 quid, i sold my old one for 330 with quite a lot of bulb life left so 800 should get something quite a lot newer. Have you been to see any up and running? DLP's are generally brighter than LCD's but if you notice the rainbow effect, like i do, then it will completely ruin the whole experience.

At that sort of money you start looking for secondhand Barco's, you could possibly pick up a 1209 for around that.
I would have look on Avforums though, plenty of info over there
