Is this a sign its burning oil? if so where would the problem lie? thanks

If its just on start up when idling its most likely worn/shrunk valve stem oil seals. But yeah its where a bit of oil will drain through the seals into the cylinders when its left stood (over night etc) which is then burnt off when its started up.

Thought so, i'ts just when the choke is on. will i have to take the head off to replace them? thanks again

If you wanted to replace them all yeah its a head off job. Most people just live with it though, depands how much its bothering you really mate.
