had a car hit my front wing this afternoon due to me being in wrong lane. Very light damage to oth cars however the other car is an N reg civic that already looks worse for wear

The female driver says its her sisters boyfriends car, but says she is insured. Got her details and the owners details. Should I phone police and see if she is insured on it? Obviously id rather go through this without insurance companies, and because its light damage.

just a quick post from my phone, apologies if its vague

do a check on ask mid seeing if it's insured at all?

if it is, go to the police station and ask whether they can find out if she is insured on her sisters boyfriends policy.

Police wont care if no one was hurt..

Check the car on the MID (www.askmid.co.uk) if its not insured tell them to GTF.. Otherwise speak to the owner and arrange repair/financial reimburcement instead of insurance and if you do this make sure its all in writing!

If it was your fault, speak to the owner of the car and offer them some money to avoid it affecting your insurance - then just get your car sorted.

Was just away to consider paying the £3.50

If it was her sisters car id maybe think she was insured, but its her sisters boyfriends car she said. And she was awful quick in wanting to get away even though it was my fault

What should I do if it turns out shes not insured, yet the accident was still my fault? Can I get out of paying for their damage?

Ask MID says its on te dataabse (did it saying it was my car for free check)

Might pop down to the police station and see if they can be of any help, dwith me reporting it to the police does this mean they have to get involved and it has to be dealt with through insurance? Also it happened 60miles away in Aberdeen and im now at home in Buckie. Will it have to be the Aberdeen police station?

Went to Police and reported it. Still haven't heard from the driver of the car / owner. Away to phone police with my insurance details just now

They were in the wrong lane, but I kind of was too but I could easily use that lane because I was taking the first exit, and so should everyone in the left lane be

Last thing I would have done is phone the police.

If you exchanged details and she wasn't insured I doubt you would have heard anything from it. Personally I'd have left it to stew for a few days. Now that accident is going to be on the Insurance Database as at fault against your name, increasing your premiums for 3/5 years

He said the police dont have to get involved unless it turn into a police matter such as no insurance.
I didnt give them my insurance details at the scene (didnt even think, just gave my details) but police asked for my insurance details because its my legal requirement to do so. They have said to contact my insurance, but I dont want to because then they'll know about it and if I settle this without insurance will they have to know or wonder what the outcome was?

One of my mates had a minor accident 2 years ago, and got a letter last week saying he wa sbeing sued for £2000 by the woman he hit and is due in Edinburgh high court in Setpember. Thought it would be best to do everything the book, dont want anything coming back and biting me in the arse. Police officer also said it looked as if they were at fault

Why have you reported it to the police? Are you going to take it through insurance or not? Have you contacted her insurance company yet?

reported it to the police incase any problems arise or the driver turns out to be an arsehole /blames me for more damage than there is. Im not taking it through insurance as its minimal damage to my front wing and would cost me more for my excess than it would to fix myself. Haven't got her insurance details. Was 4pm, rush hour traffic on a roundabout and just got her details and the owner of the car's details. tbh im not fussed if they dont contact me, im just glad the damage isnt alot worse because they just missed my door by an inch and a half

The police WILL NOT give you the insurance details (who is or is not insured) on the vehicle.

best thing to do is track the owner of the car and meet him and speak to him on a MATES basis and decide whether it will be an insurance jobby (if she was infact insured)

you wont know where to stand until this is done me thinks

They will find out if they are insured or not, and if they aren't then it will be a police matter

Reporting it to the Police doesn't have anything to do with the insurance database.

It does if it turns out the driver is un-insured
