Anyone on here hot on the law when it comes to debts/balifs?

My mate is a silly badger and he has 'forgotten' to pay his rates.. Balifs were sniffing around but couldnt find the exact unit number so left.. He's phoned the council and paid the rates for the rest of the year but do the balifs still have a right to their fee's even though they couldnt actually find him?

AFAIK once they are instructed and make a visit they charge a fee for that visit

Your mate will probably just have to pay it as a result of his incompetance tbh

Not sure tbh, but I did a similar thing in the past and had the bailiffs knock with their extra fee on top. Told them to piss off and paid the actual company I owed the money too and never heard anything of it.

Do you have to pay the charges if you pay off the debt
If you pay off your debt in full to the creditor before the bailiffs are instructed, you don’t have to pay bailiff’s charges.

Once bailiffs have been asked to act, you'll usually have to pay their charges whether or not they can take your goods.

If you pay off the debt to the creditor but not the bailiffs’ charges that you owe, the bailiffs can’t take goods from you just to recover their own costs. They'll have to take action against you themselves to get the money back.

If he got in there first before being given the bill from the collection company, get can rightly tell them to GTF, once the debt is paid they are surplus to requirements. if they turn up its at their own cost as they should check the status of any account before any visit.
