Yep if the surrounding area is clear it should make the job alot easier, if you have a chainsaw or a mate with one you could ground level them but that would still be 2-3" above ground as thats as low as you could go without blunting the chain on the saw, Also if there 2 foot across you would need a pretty hefty saw with a big bar probably need a 24" bar +.

2nd option would be a stump grinder, you can get the guys in to come and grind them out for you but they charge alot! im talking £250+ for any job (I think) or you can hire them for around £80-£100 a day and do it yourself if you feel confident.

Also once you have them down as far as you can get your going to want to completly kill it, you can buy some stump/root killer from BnQ and the likes costs about £5 and you mix it into like a wall paper paste and paint it onto the stump. Then you will need to cover it over with something probably a black bag and then just put some soil ontop or something to keep the bag on and it should see it completely dead in 6+ months.

Hope that helps, Dont know if its completely right/true but thats just some advice I thought I would throw out there.

Stumps will need digging out. Get an axe and a spade and go mental.

Might need a chainsaw an all.

He said the tree where 40-60ft high! you cant just dig a stump out, can you imagine the size of the rootball on the bottom and the weight of it you would be left with a 5ft hole lol.
