how do i tell if its a later one ? i have an m reg one so still pretty early but it has a metal upper inlet

then its probably a x16xe, the c16xes have plastic upper inlet, it also has the engine code engraved on the front of the block right next to where it meets the gearbox!

That's the X16XE.
The C16XE's have plastic inlets.

The C16XE also has an AFM, should only be L and M registrations.
