Noticed that all my photos seem to have weird things appearing in them so I am assuming there is crap on the lens.

What can you clean them with? Dont want to make it any worse

Nikon compact camera btw

i bought a kit from jessops was quite reasonable price actually 8 quid. In that i got len cleaner fluid spray, lens tissue, lens cloth, protective film for the lcd display of the camera, mini tripod and dusting brush

I also just use a half decent cloth.

so something like a sunglasses cleaning cloth will be ok? Put anything on it like window cleaner or just dry wipe

Sunglasses cloth is perfect, no chemicals.

I just use a clean microfibre cloth, works for me.

It could also be dirt on your sensor.

That's what use for all my glass.

People treat lenses as if they are so fragile. Load of toss.

i was under the impression the lens has some kind of coating on it, which can be damaged by harsh chemicals

You mean apart from the series of glass lenses inside the main lens case which, if knocked out of position, mean crap images.

No, not fragile at all
