Its a centre difflock though nothing like a proper locking diff.
A mate of mine has just bought a top spec range rover sport with a twin turbo diesel engine or something but it hasnt moved once, hes been using his defender on 33s with locking diffs and hasnt had any problems in the snow.

Yeah a centre diff lock makes sure both front and back wheels go at the same speed, its extremely rare to get front/ rear difflocks and aftermarket ones are fucking expensive.
I don't really understand what a proper diff lock is as you need a seperate one for each diff.

People say cars have locking diffs when they dont they have a centre difflock which is nothing like a locking diff in the axle and not really any benefit offroad.
A "proper" difflock doesnt have to be that expensive, air locking diffs are big money though because you have to buy a compressor etc to have incar.

WTF, any proper offroader has a centre diff. 4 wheel drive cars usually never have a centre diff

Eg nissan xtrails don't have a centre diff, thats why if you put it in 4x4 mode on tarmac you will fuck the propshaft.

Cars only as good as it's tyres and anything with a Land Rover badge on it will be more than capable off road or in the snow when it's got the right shoes on...

WTF no they dont and the propshaft is likely to be the last thing to break, transmission wind up will break a diff or a transfer box before anything else, 4wd cars usually have a centre diff to allow difference in speed between front and rear wheels.
SJs
Vitaras
Fourtraks
Frontera
Troopers
Moneterys,
None of them have centre diffs so I guess none of them are "proper" proper offroaders.

You are actually right that the transmission will break first aye.
In the case of 4x4 cars I would call them transfer boxes eg you don't call a 4x4 calibra's mechanics a centre diff, you would look for a transfer box, just a quick google there and the likes of evos/imprezas there are more results for "transfer box" instead of "centre diff".
Also I WOULD said proper 4x4s have a centre diff eg shoguns/discos/defenders etc.
