Since the topic of choice is number plates  I have my own question.
I have an Irish plate on my car as it was taken over to NI. The car was registered over here first and came with an 06 plate. Can I transfer/sell the Irish mark and put the original plate back on or is that now not possible???

You should be able to put the Irish mark on a retention certificate, and then the DVLA will assign a new UK numberplate to the vehicle. Whether it is the original or not though can't be determined. Typically it is.
Then you can sell the retention certificate, or transfer it to another person or vehicle.

As long as it doesn't go on a Q plate lol
Any idea of the costs for this??? I know standard retention for a year is £105 do you think that's all it would be??

Theoretically yes.
Weather it's possible with an Irish that was done by Ireland, I don't know. If that makes sense.
An Irish plate that was bought as a 'cherished numberplate' it's possible, not 100% sure on your scenario.
Theoretically you should be able to do it.
It's £105 for retention, or £80 for a transfer, if you can find a buyer for your private plate.

Check that the reg doc doesn't indicate a non-transferable registration mark.

This. Will say at the bottom of your V5 on the front page (Section 3), NONE TRANSFERABLE REGESTRATION MARK. Means you cant take it off.

Where would it state that Ian? Got my V5C in front of me and can't find anything that says it is or isn't...

It just says "declared new at first registration".

My old civic was a non transferable, but I was under the impression that ment that reg couldnt be transfered, not that I couldnt put another reg on it.............?

Yeah it'll be under the 'declared new' section.
Means you can't sell it if that line is present.
If this is to make money you do need to consider whether the transfer fee will wipe out the profile. Unless it's fairly special it's not worth massive amounts.

we had a saxo vtr that was registered in scotland then taken to ireland where it registed over there and got an irish plate but years later when it came back it had to be registered again over here and got a standard uk style plate again and i guess the irish plate it had just went back into there system

That's weird then. My standard reg can be sold. Although the car was registered new with a private plate. Might have something to do with it.
