I don't actually think there is one on the road, i know they say about the SVA on VXRO but thats for registering a car for road use. Don't think it actually applies once the car is registered.

Can't remember who it is but someone on here has said before that they are an MOT Tester and VOSA came and did an inspection or something and said themselves that it's a fail if your first thought on starting it is that it's stupidly loud.

MOT's are down to testers themselves, If they deem it too loud, its too loud.
If you think its too loud, it prob is.

The actual mot rule is it can be failed on exhaust noise that is louder than a similar car fitted with standard exhaust silencers.
I know because we failed one last week.

Mine got an advisory last week for being noisy. Not bothered as long as it doesn't fail
The description for the reference (7.1.2b) is this: a silencer in such a condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.

Sound measured in decibels is a logarithmic scale though Mark, so even though 116 dB is very loud for a car, it's not particularly easy to compare it to something else by its dB value.

My cousin had an old mini and wapped a bIg engine in and just used scaffold pipe for his exhaust and the police stopped him and said it was to loud so he got a warning and told to change it, and they said if we stop you again your getting fined or something

116db is very loud, my van with full 3 inch exhaust measured under 90db at anglsey race track!
mates with radical with just a single silencer as the exhaust was struggling to get under the 105 db limit! sort of passed it!
that was loud

HSE say anything over 85db is considered loud, and in the workplace, hearing protection is required.

Can do this with the bimmer but it's not loud, car alarms don't like the deep bassy note for some reason

I got done in my sport by the traffic police a couple of years ago for the exhaust being too loud, it had passed the mot a week before with it (with the cat in of course) but in their opinion it was overly loud (4 branch, decat, standard centre and Remus backbox) they gave me a £60 fine and told me to change it, I never did and it has never been and issue since.
