Car is 10 years old now with all original parts so I guess I cant expect any better.

Please re-assure me the following are wear and tear items and that they arent supposed to break every 2 years

Failures
Near and Offside front track rod end ball joints excessive play
4 Brake pipes (not hoses, actual pipes ) excessively corroded
Offside (comp valve to flexi) brake pipe excessively corroded

Advisories
Front and rear pitted discs (what the hell is that, the fronts were new last year, only done 10k commuting?)
Both front tyres close to legal limit (over 2mm left though so they will be swapped with the 2 newer tyres at the back)
Corroded near and offside front to rear brake pipes (that were replaced last year...)
Nearside rear brake pads thin (but not offside as well, isnt that wrong??)

Stupid car, I knew willy waving in the 'how much does your car cost you in maintenance a year" thread would be my downfall

Ah ok, I always thought hoses were rubber / plastic and pipes were metal objects, then again I am a numpty with a spanner, all I can do is change wheels and bulbs, no one in my family is good in this respect so Ive got no one to learn from how to fix these things myself

Does it mean the flexi bits going to the caliper do you think? Nothing too major on there tbh

I dont think it would say "Excessively corroded" on the rubber hoses. Id have a check yourself or maybe ask your MOT man, Don't be afraid to ask lol.

Brakes, do them in pairs obv.
Has the car been sat for a long time?

Balljoints are normal, Brakes is just due to it being a old car.

Car is used every day, admittedly its only 14 or so miles a day and then once a month a 100 mile round trip. I drive like a bit of a granny which is why I get annoyed when parts of the suspension and brakes fail, Im so fucking gentle with them Does around 10k a year

I could understand it if I ragged it about like my first Corsa, which only lasted about 10 months. But I guess at 10 years old these things are going to start to fail, weirdly enough, the exhaust which has been an advisory for the last 2 MOT's wasnt even picked up this year, was kind of expecting it to fail on that tbh

That's probably the reason the brakes are pitted - it comes from surface rust that eats into the disc. If you brake reasonably hard every now and again (every few days should be fine), then it'll wipe the entire surface rust off the disc and it'll have no chance to get pitted at all.

The brake pipes are the copper pipes. To be expected with the age of the car.

Why would you put shite tyres on the undriven wheels at the back? Far safer to get a bit of understeer (which you can control) than the back end swinging out of a FWD car

my mk4 astra needed a full set of metal brake pipes (did all these myself) headlight bulb, new cat, fog light not working (dash switch) tyres, front brakes out of balance and a couple of other things...
cars are just endless money pits

you can get a brake pipe flairing tool for about £12 from motorfactors, then brake pipe on a roll is about £8 for 25 foot

even with buying the tool and the pipe, it still works out waaay cheaper than a garage doing it,
and its surprisingly easy to make brake pipes up.

Its a right shit cunt horrible job though. Astra metal brake pipes rust quite a bit, especially where they go into the engine bay under the wheel arches.
