Rite have a 325i M sport touring at the moment; its a 52 plate and really like the car but fed up with putting petrol in it!! Getting 29MPG and seem to be using it a lot.
Its primarily my partner who is going to be using it as have a 307 HDi myself for work but we only have one income and i don't want her to be conscious of how much fuel she is using and stop her going places. Also would like something a bit better on fuel so that we don't always end up taking the 307 just cos its cheaper to run!

Needs to be another estate or similar load space as we have a small dog and baby so have to take a car load of stuff whenever we go out!

I reckon i can get around £4K to £4.5K for the E46 and have about £5K to put with. Have been thinking e90 320d BMW but they seem to be high mileage for my budget. Any other ideas?

Get a nice Golf 2.0 diesel for that money. Newish, low mileage, hold its money well and 50mpg.

The only thing im not sure about is the size; as the 3 series is only just big enough! Passatt might be a good call, have thought of A4 but similar price to e90 BMW. Skoda looks good and i bet its well spec'd for the money

Thats a bloody good shout; just been looking at them on ebay and for £6K you can get something half decent; and given the size of the boot and the fact that they are hatch back we might not even need an estate version!

Try one and see. My boss had a 93 saloon which is technically a bigger car, but because of the boot ended up with shit rear leg room. He got his wife a golf for more space

yep, also spec wise you should expect either leather or half leather recaros, sat nav, cruise control, heated seats, possibly xenons, electric everything pretty much, VERY well specced.

159 sportwagon JTDM
X-type estate 2.0 TD

I'd probably go for an A4 S line.
